World Cup 2014: Cameroon v Croatia

CMR 0 – 4 CRO: Cameroon have not been anywhere near the races at this World Cup and this result further rubs salt into the wounds of a country that promises much but fails to deliver on the world stage. A lack of direction and intent from the outset is not the only issue in this side, with a seemingly selfish captain failing to unite players who lack discipline. This was sadly evident tonight with scenes of the Cameroonian players fighting amongst each other before the eyes of the world in pure frustration. Assou-Ekotto blatantly head butted teammate Benjamin Moukandjo on the field late on to exacerbate the issues amongst the squad. The actions of Barcelona’s Alex Song summarise what has been a wretched tournament for the Africans. Song was sent off early in the first half for a punch to the back of Mandžukić, an inexcusable moment of madness. The Indomitable Lions play Brazil in their last game without a goal to their name and could potentially go home in disgrace. As bad as Cameroon were, Croatia were fantastic. Ivan Rakitić and Luka Modrić impeccable in the middle of the park and the return of Mario Mandžukić added a cutting edge up front. Bayern Munich target man Mandžukić grabbed himself a well deserved brace either side of an excellent solo run and strike from the standout Ivan Perišić. This was all after Ivica Olić added a well crafted opener that set the tone for the night. Croatia now go into a mouthwatering “winner takes all” match against Mexico for a place in the next round, and for me my money is on Croatia. They have too much class to go home now and owe it to themselves to realise their potential and go very far in this tournament. Much to look forward to in Group A.
