World Cup 2014: Colombia v Uruguay

COL 2 – 0 URU: Who cares about Luis Suarez?! I’d rather talk about James Rodríguez…the elegant Colombian trequartista is making this World Cup his World Cup. After three sublimely accomplished performances in the group stages where he scored three goals and provided two assists with two man of the match performances, the AS Monaco star has set the world stage alight with the type of football you aspire to and dream of when you are growing up. Tonight in Fortaleza Rodríguez firmly established himself as one of the world’s best with a match-winning performance full of quality and class. The opening goal was potentially the best of the tournament as Rodríguez took an Aguilar header on his chest on the edge of the box, swivelled and volleyed a magnificent strike into the Uruguay goal off the underside of the crossbar. The sea of fanatic Colombian fans in the crowd went wild as the players celebrated with their trademark dance-off at the corner flag. Rodríguez was everywhere – delicate touches, intelligent game awareness and full of aggressive attacking running. Just after half time he added a second – a floated ball into the Uruguay box was headed back across goal by the excellent Juan Cuadrado and Rodríguez was quickest to blast the ball past Muslera. Uruguay had no answer, Cavani tried his upmost to fashion a few chances for his side but anything Uruguay threw at Colombia was dealt with easily. Overshadowed by the Suarez incident and thrown into turmoil because of it, Tabarez will feel aggrieved and victimised but in truth his side lacked the quality to progress. Colombia will go into their quarter final against Brazil full of confidence and many will predict a shock in the making! That remains to be seen, but in Rodriguez they have the key to go as far as they want in this tournament. It was a wonderful performance from Colombia, exciting to watch, tough at the back and creative in midfield. The future is bright, the future is Colombian yellow…
