World Cup 2014: Japan v Greece

JPN 0 – 0 GRE: A disappointingly atrocious game of football in Natal between a systematically negative Greek side, who further looked the stifle the game after the sending off of their captain Kostas Katsouranis, and a frustrated Japanese team who lacked the quality to find a cutting edge and finish off their opponents. There were pockets of good spells from Japan often involving Honda and Endo but the forward play of Osako and Okubo failed to penetrate a stubborn Greek defence who I have to say were outstanding throughout. Embodied by the tough tackling and strong defensive work of Olympiacos’s encouraging young centre half Kostas Manolas, the Greeks staved off every Japanese attack. They rarely ventured forward after the sending off of their captain so the game was more of an attack vests defence exercise. Japan had a whopping 78% of possession but could not make it count. Greece will settle for the result which means they know exactly what they have to do, beat Cote d’Ivoire in their last game and qualify for the Second Round. I don’t think they will and I hope for the sake of the tournament I hope they don’t. Japan need to beat group leaders Colombia to have any chance of qualifying from the group which now seems unlikely. Zaccheroni will be disappointed with his young troops who I am sure he will expect more from if he stays in his role after the tournament. A disappointing group of games today, lets hope for better tomorrow.
