TUR 0:1 CRO – an exciting performance from Croatia who get off to the best of starts thanks to a magical strike from one of the tournaments best players, Real Madrid C.F.‘s Luka Modrić. The diminutive playmaker beautifully volleyed in from all of 25 yards just before the break – he took a looping ball cleared out of defence from the Turks first time, controlling the strike expertly to beat the diving hands of keeper Volkan Babacan. The Croats manufactured chance after chance in the 2nd half (19 in total!) as they looked to put the game beyond doubt – first captain Darijo Srna hit the bar from a set-piece before impressive F.C. Internazionale Milano forward Ivan Perišić wasted a glorious chance to add to the scoreline by again hitting the woodwork. How Perišić’s Inter teammate Marcelo Brozović failed to connect with a superb ball across the box to clinch it for the Vatreni is beyond me. The scoreline flattered a disappointing Turkish performance. Young Fenerbahçe midfielder Ozan Tufan wasted their best chance by heading straight at AS MONACO stopper Danijel Subašić in the first half. A rare effort from The Crescent-Stars late on produced a timely block from Vedran Ćorluka, who after a cut to the head looked Terry Butcher-esque in his wrap-around bandage! Celebratory scenes at the end as the entire Croatia squad hailed their adoring support showed the world what enjoying these championships should look like after days of mindless violence in Marseille.
